Professor Mona Bafadhel is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at King’s College London (KCL) and a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Professor. Mona is the Director of the King’sCentre for Lung Health, Professor of Asthma+Lung UK and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Mona completed her PhD in‘Biomarkers of exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)’and was the first to identify the utility of the peripheral blood eosinophil count in COPD and COPD exacerbations. This work has directly influenced international guidance and is now routinely used in the management of patients with COPD.In 2019, Mona was awarded the prestigious Goulstonian Lectureship from the Royal College of Physicians, London. She is only the 4th woman and 1st woman from an ethnic minority in theRoyal College of Physicians400-year-old history to have received this for excellence in the Clinical Sciences.In 2024,Mona was the recipient of the European Respiratory SocietyCOPDGold Medal.
